PlanetScale vs Neon vs Supabase – serverless database for side projects

0

Hey everyone! Starting a new side project and trying to pick a database.

I’ve used MongoDB and PostgreSQL before but never tried these serverless options.

What I need:

  • Good free tier (just testing right now)
  • Easy to connect with Prisma
  • No cold starts issues ideally
  • Good DX

PlanetScale seems popular but they changed their pricing? Neon looks interesting. Supabase has the most features.

What’s your experience? 👀

Supabase fan here! 👋

I started with Neon but switched to Supabase because:

  • Auth included – saves me so much time
  • Real-time subscriptions are built-in
  • The free tier is more generous
  • Great docs and community

Yes it’s a bit heavier but having everything in one place is worth it for a side project.

That said, if you just need a DB and nothing else, Neon is fine. To each their own! 🤔

Using Neon for my side project and loving it! 🎉

Here’s why I chose Neon over the others:

Neon – It’s literally just PostgreSQL but serverless. No weird proprietary syntax. The branching feature is super cool for testing.

Supabase – More features but heavier. Good if you need auth + storage built-in. But I just need a DB.

PlanetScale – Had issues with their pricing changes. Also Vitess under the hood means some SQL limitations.

My pick: Neon for pure PostgreSQL experience. Supabase if you want the full package. 🔥
